The world university system greatly expanded between 1945 and 1970. But this was a time when the world was economically flush… Ever since then… The governments of the world have been less flush, but the universities have continued to expand. A larger percentage of high-school graduates throughout the world seeks to enter the universities every year. They do so because they think this will enhance their life chances…
More students and less money equals chronic crisis. We have all been living through that, and I see no reason to expect this economic constraint to go away…
For one thing, people are living longer and therefore working longer, and the
authorities of the world-system will try even harder to keep young people out of the job market. Keeping them in the university system is a genuine social solution but an expensive one.
