  • Incorrect: SIDE-nee
  • Correct: SID-nee

Melbourne

  • Incorrect: MEL-born
  • Correct: MEL-bin / MEL-ben

Canberra

  • Incorrect: Can-BARE-a
  • Correct: CAM-bra (Yes. That’s really how we say it.)

Brisbane

  • Incorrect: BRIS-bane
  • Correct: BRIZ-bin / BRIZ-ben

Adelaide

  • Incorrect: A-DEAL-aid
  • Correct: ADD-el-aid

Darwin & Perth

  • Try and fuck these up, I dare you.

All true, though I used to sometimes pronounce the r in Melbourne, but then I lived in Brisbane and we didn’t like Melbourne.

I had only Melbourne and Canberra wrong.. :)

really? there’s more:

  • in the 1990s when a Toronto businessmen tipped me off that he was “selling” his business for $1-million to a foreigner, then buying it back simultaneously. This allowed the foreigner to put down on his immigration application that he had invested in a business with 20 employees in Canada. (Technically, the foreigner had, if only for a split second.) The Canadian was paid $50,000 per transaction and did dozens in a matter of weeks.
  • various incarnations of this trick have continued, including the “purchase” of some relative’s business or counting the purchase of a condo as though it was an act of entrepreneurship.
I have to say, Diane Francis is completely off with her article. The immigration system is not about “finding winners” it’s about allowing as many people in without having Canada’s anal retentives’ feathers ruffled.

Australian prison guard assaults inmate

Shocking CCTV footage shows a prisoner in his cell being punched in the head and upper body by a guard while his colleague holds the inmate down. The incident took place in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, in October last year after the prisoner spat at a guard. The inmate has been sentenced to two months in prison for spitting, while the guard is due to be sentenced next month
