I don’t understand why Amanda’s mental illness has been given such short shrift. She didn’t kill herself because she was being bullied. The vast majority of children who are bullied don’t kill themselves. She killed herself because she was in the middle of a mental health crisis that should have been treated. Diane Weber Bederman, I couldn’t agree more!

An Ontario clothing store worker has lost his job after posting a vile Facebook comment about B.C. teenager Amanda Todd. The man was fired from Mr. Big & Tall after using a derogatory term and writing the 15-year-old deserved to die in a post on the Amanda Todd memorial Facebook page. (via Amanda Todd Facebook comment gets man fired from Mr. Big and Tall store | News | National Post)
This guy may have been an asshole (though I haven’t even seen his comment), but is getting fired for something stupid he did, presumably, in his own free time a fair “punishment”?! Likewise, is 99 years in prison for a mother who “lost it” and beat her child to a coma fair and adequate? I don’t think so.
Most importantly, how are the bullies different than the anti-bullying mobs? It seems as if the anti-bullying mobs are bigger bullies than the bully.
The man who first bullied Amanda is the biggest offender in this story, but if I understand it correctly, she refused to press charges against any of her attackers. Maybe they should still be brought to justice, but all this bully [witch]hunt increasingly seems to be perpetrated by better connected / bigger bullies.

There is an astonishing seam of trolling that concerns violence against women (I was particularly struck recently by the person who said they wanted to fuck Josie Long in the eyes) but such abuse is generally without consequence.

..to be completely honest, I don’t think throwing people in jail for offensive thoughts is the way to deal with it; at most, forced therapy of some kind, but even that is waaay too heavy handed..
