I am saying that this is bizarre because I can’t really understand how one writes that a 20-year old man “began a sexual relationship” with a seven year old. This is not the worst thing about this opening. The worst thing is toward the end when it is implied that the seven-year old girl consented to sex. How do we know this? Terry told us. There would be something to be said for verification when practicing journalism, except that there’s no way to verify consent from someone who can’t give it.

A vague rape apologia runs through this piece—the implication of “men who have sex with children” as an oppressed group, the equation of pedophilia with other sexual orientations, and little to no consideration of victims. What bugs me is this is a topic that could use some mature journalism and thinking that goes beyond “hang them all.” (The talented Jennifer Gonnerman does it here.) But this isn’t it. It’s poor journalism, and an insensitive attempt at being edgy.

Toronto police have arrested an 82-year-old man in connection with a sexual assault investigation. Police say the man was arrested May 31 after allegations that he sexually assaulted a two children. Fermin Caracas has allegedly baby-sat a number of children in his home over the past 10 years. It is alleged that he sexually assaulted two children, a boy and a girl, in two separate incidents. The boy was allegedly assaulted between 2002 and 2003 by the accused. Caracas,has been charged with two counts of sexual assault, two counts of sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching. Ebert, a divorcee, is alleged to have had sex with the teens at her home in Cameron, Wisconsin. A 38-year-old teacher has been charged with raping a student under the age of 16. Heather Whitten, a married mother of three, was arrested by police at the Alabama School where she was worked as a fifth grade reading teacher. Police have released few details about the alleged rape but confirmed the victim was aged between 12 and 16 years of age. We need to wake up and realize that there isn’t much difference between men’s and women’s desires. While men are more likely to act on them, women spend most of their youth defending against a never-ending wave of oversexed males. It’s only as they get older that their needs are less fulfilled.
